AGON WINNERS
Agon means contest or
competition, and it was a vital component to most ancient
Greek festivals. It is also the aspect that most of us
miss out on today, since we are largely doing ritual
alone and therefore unable to mount real contests. So the
Neokoroi are hosting one large agon, as a group, to honor
the gods.
Since athletic and theatrical
competitions would be difficult to carry out virtually,
we will instead focus on writing and visual art. The agon
is open to any Hellenic pagan, but will be judged by the
members of Neokoroi, who are sponsoring the event.
Submissions will be collected and then posted
simultaneously (with names removed) so everyone has equal
time. They will be made public to everyone, but only
Neokoroi members may vote.
Submissions for the next Agon begin
January 2008. They will be posted on the first day of
the Greater Dionysia in March (which was famous in Athens
for its large theatrical competition), and judging will
close on the last day of the festival. Prizes to be
announced. The winners will also receive an award logo to
place on their websites, if desired, and their names and
links to their work will be displayed here.
If you would like to submit an entry
to the Neokoroi Agon, or have any questions, please
contact
us. Submissions should be
created specifically for this competition and should have
a theme related to Hellenismos, mythology, the gods,
ancient Greece, etc. They must also fit into one of the
four categories: Poetry, Short Fiction, Photography
and Other Visual Art.
