Symposia
In ancient Greece, symposia were
essentially intellectual drinking parties. Men would
recline on couches, drink wine, and discuss topics
ranging from mythology to politics. They sometimes
recited poetry or played games. Musicians and dancers,
usually women, were provided as entertainment.
Today, our symposia are open to all
members, male and female, and take the form of a live
online chat. They are set for the Noumenia (the new moon
- or first visible lunar crescent - which is the
beginning of the ancient Greek month), and will be posted
here and announced on the list for those who don't keep
lunar calendars. Each month, a topic or topics will be
chosen by a member. The chats do not have to keep rigidly
to these topics, but rather they are a jumping-off point
for discussion.
Each symposium will be preceded that
evening with a simple Noumenia ritual (see
Rituals
page), and we will begin the chat itself with a group
libation to the gods (each member will make this libation
in their own homes). The chats will begin at 6pm PST /
9pm EST and last as long as the participants
wish.
Any member is also welcome to invite
others to an impromptu symposia using the Neokoroi
chatroom, whenever they like.
